Albufera National Park (Parque Natural de la Albufera) is a protected natural area located on the eastern coast of Spain, near the city of Valencia. It's one of the most important wetlands in the Iberian Peninsula and is renowned for its ecological, cultural, and agricultural significance.  

Albufera is one of the most productive agricultural regions (with large rice fields), and represents a complex interaction between agriculture, fishing activities, biodiversity, and water management.

🏞️ Overview

  • Established: 1986
  • Area: ~21,000 hectares (including the lagoon and surrounding rice fields)
  • Main Feature: The Albufera Lagoon, a large freshwater lagoon separated from the Mediterranean Sea by a narrow strip of dunes and forest.
  • Location: ~10 km south of Valencia city.

🌿 Ecosystem and Biodiversity

  • Wetlands: A vital stopover for migratory birds, and home to many aquatic plants, fish, and endangered species.
  • Birdwatching: Over 250 species of birds, including flamingos, herons, and egrets.
  • Flora: Reed beds, dunes, Mediterranean scrub, and pine forests.

  • Boat Rides: Visitors can take traditional wooden boats (albuferencs) to explore the lagoon.

  • Sunset Viewing: Especially from the village of El Palmar, known for its paella restaurants.
